Math

This year the 4th grade team will be using the new Everyday Math 4 curriculum to assist in teaching both 4th and 5th grade math skills. Each day in math class students will be presented with a daily warm-up, mini-lesson, teacher guided practice, and independent practice. Students may not have math homework each day, but they can always be practicing their Math skills on IXL. Please look in your student's planner daily to see if there is a math assignment for that day.

Books and Magazines

Literacy

At Bel Air Elementary we use the balanced literacy model to guide our instruction. The goal is to teach students reading skills that they can apply to any book, magazine, webpage, or graphic novel that they may be reading.

Each reading strategy is presented during a mini-lesson where the teacher models the use of this strategy. Then the students  practice the reading strategy in their independent reading book. All students read for about 30 minutes each day. Children also receive small group reading instruction to meet their specific reading needs.

Students are graded using a 4 point rubric, so please keep an eye out for these rubrics coming home every couple weeks. Each day your 4th grader should be reading 20 or more minutes outside of school daily

Second Step

Each week our school focuses on a social skill that all Bel Air students practice throughout their daily activities and interactions. There will be a Second Step flyer that will come home with your child each week to communicate the skills that they are working on in school. Our hope is to partner with families to encourage children to use these skills at home as well!

Unit Studies
